LIST OF APPROVED CONTINUING EDUCATION

Community association management is a dynamic profession with frequently changing laws, issues, and technologies. To ensure credentialed managers can provide the most up to date service, CAMICB requires certified managers to complete 16 hours of continuing education every two years.

Education can consist of opportunities from webinars to courses to conferences, many of which are already pre-approved for credit and available to browse on the Continuing Education Gallery

While credential holders are not required to submit proof of course completion at the time of recertifying, CAMICB recommends retaining proof of completion in the event of an audit. CAMICB randomly audits recertification applications for evidence of completion. Managers selected for audit will be required to show documented proof of completion of continuing education courses. This includes courses offered on demand or at no cost. Managers are encouraged to use the CMCA Education Tracking Worksheet to log coursework as it is completed.

CAMICB has a wide variety of options for managers to find continuing education opportunities and complete their 16-hour requirement. Credential holders can choose from the wide array of previously approved coursework or can request approval for courses/opportunities that have not been pre-approved by CAMICB.

From the list below, options 1-4 have all been previously approved by the CAMICB Continuing Education Committee or are otherwise accepted for CMCA continuing education credit.

Options 5-9 must be submitted to CAMICB with a request for pre-approval prior to submission of the Recertification Application. Request approval for using any of these options with the CMCA Request for CE Approval form. This form must be submitted to CAMICB at info@camicb.org prior to submission of the CMCA Recertification Application.

The CAMICB Continuing Education Review Committee constantly approves new continuing education opportunities for managers to obtain qualifying education.

Managers can find all current approved courses in the Continuing Education Gallery.

The Community Associations Institute (CAI) is a separate non-profit organization dedicated to providing current and relevant education and resources for the community association industry. CAMICB recognizes CAI’s commitment to developing quality education specifically for community association managers, and all CAI education has been preapproved for CMCA continuing education credit.

The Professional Management Development Program (PMDP) courses are particularly beneficial and worth upwards of 6-16 credit hours each. Managers can view all of CAI’s continuing education offerings in the Learning Center.

CMCA prerequisite coursework is also approved for continuing education credit.  The same coursework may not be used to meet both examination eligibility and continuing education requirements.  For example, if a manager used CAI’s M-100 to fulfill their prerequisite requirement for the CMCA examination, they may not submit it for continuing education credit when recertifying their CMCA.

Coursework approved by a qualifying state regulatory agency for community association manager licensing requirements will be automatically approved for CMCA continuing education credit.  These states currently include Florida, Nevada, and Virginia.

Managers may request CE approval for any continuing education programs that will benefit their learning or performance as a community association manager. This can include webinars, conferences, college courses, seminars, etc. The education must either pertain to an aspect of community association management, or otherwise contribute toward professional development. Please note CAMICB will not accept real estate education as continuing education.

For example, if a manager lives in a community where many residents do not speak English as a first language, then they can complete a course in a foreign language and have it approved toward their CMCA renewal. This would be an example of a program benefiting a manager’s performance as a community association manager as it would improve their communication skills with their community.

Managers may request approval for education provided by their own employer, also known as in-house training. A credential holder may use a maximum of eight CE credits from preapproved in-house training courses per two-year cycle. This includes education taught by a credential holders’ employer or education completed through their employer’s online platform. Education that is brought in and taught by a third party, for example a law firm providing an organization an update on legislation issues, would not be counted as in-house training.

Managers may submit for approval articles they have written for regional or national community association publications. A copy of the published work must be submitted with the application for approval. CE credits will be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • 500–1,000-word article: 2 hours
  • 1,001–1,500-word article: 3 hours
  • 1,500+: 4 hours
  • Book or journal: up to 10 hours based on individual analysis

Managers who teach a course that relates to community association management may request approval for continuing education credit. Two credits are earned for each class hour the first time the course is taught. When the same course is taught subsequent times, one credit is earned for each class hour.

Managers may request CE credit approval for volunteer service to organizations whose mission pertains to advancing community associations or the management profession. Approval may also be granted for advocacy work to support community associations and management professionals, such as providing official testimony or analysis on legislation or regulation (lobbying is not included). Other volunteer activities concerning the operations of a community association, such as the voluntary service on a board of a community association, may also be submitted for approval. Credential holders cannot request credit for any activity for which they receive compensation.

Credential holders must provide objective evidence of their participation to receive CE credit for their volunteer service. The evidence should be specific and verifiable, demonstrating that the activity met the criteria.

No more than 8 credits per two-year recertification cycle may be awarded for volunteer service.

The following service activities can be counted towards continuing education hours:

  • National/International Organization Board: 8 hours
  • State Organization/Chapter Board: 4 hours
  • Organization Committee: 4 hours
  • Certification Exam Development: 8 hours
  • Advocacy Work: 4 hours
  • HOA/Condo Board: 4 hours
